Ant control in Singapore

A trail of ants to a spill is a nuisance you can wipe away. Ants that keep coming back, turn up in the bedroom or bathroom, or nest in walls, electrical sockets and plant pots need treatment that reaches the colony, and with some species the wrong spray makes the problem spread.

Tell us what you're seeing and we'll pass it to a partner pest-control firm. The firm identifies the ant, finds the nest and quotes the treatment.

What a ant problem looks like

  • Trails of tiny ants along skirting, worktops and window frames, often leading to food, sugar or pet bowls.
  • Ants coming out of electrical sockets, switch plates, cracks between tiles or gaps in window frames, a sign they're nesting inside the wall.
  • Ants in bathrooms and bedrooms, well away from food, often after water.
  • Small heaps of soil or debris near walls, plant pots or garden beds.
  • Winged ants indoors, which can mean a mature colony nearby.
  • Stings or bites, especially from ants in the garden.

Common household ants here include tiny pale ghost ants and pharaoh ants, fast, erratic crazy ants, and larger ants in gardens. The species decides the treatment, so a close-up photo helps.

Treatment options for ants

The partner firm recommends a treatment after seeing the property. These are the methods it's likely to talk you through.

Inspection and identification

The firm follows the trails to find where the ants are nesting and identifies the species, since the right treatment differs between them.

Baiting

Slow-acting bait gel or granules are carried by worker ants back to the nest, where they reach the queens. It's the main treatment for most indoor ants. It's slower than spraying, but it goes after the source.

Nest treatment

Where the nest can be reached, in a wall void, a plant pot or a garden bed, dust or liquid is applied directly to it.

Targeted perimeter treatment

For ants coming in from outside, a residual insecticide may be applied around doors, window frames and entry points. Firms choose this carefully indoors, because some species, such as pharaoh ants, react to repellent sprays by splitting into several new colonies.

Follow-up

A follow-up visit checks whether the bait has worked and tops it up wherever ants are still feeding.

With baiting, activity drops over days rather than straight away. Ask the firm how long it expects before you see a difference, and what to do if you don't.

What affects the price

We don't publish prices. The partner firm gives you a price after an inspection, or from what you tell it when the job is simple. These are the things it will ask about.

  • The species, and where the nest is.
  • How many rooms are affected, and whether the ants are also nesting outside.
  • The number of visits needed to clear the colony.
  • The size of the property, including gardens and planters at landed homes.
  • Whether it's a one-off treatment or part of a regular general pest service.

Comparing quotes

When you compare prices, compare what's included: the number of visits, whether follow-ups are in the price, what's treated, and what happens if the problem comes back.

How to prepare, and what happens on the day

Before the visit

  • Stop spraying the ants in the days before treatment. It scatters them and can put them off the bait.
  • Wipe up food and sugary spills and keep food sealed, but leave the trails themselves so the firm can follow them.
  • Note where you see ants, and where they seem to disappear to.
  • Move things away from the skirting and cabinets where the trails run.

On the day

  1. 1 The firm follows the trails, identifies the species and looks for nests.
  2. 2 Bait is placed along the trails and near nests, and any nest it can reach is treated directly.
  3. 3 Entry points from outside may be treated with a residual product.
  4. 4 Before leaving, the firm tells you what not to disturb and when to expect results.

Afterwards

You may see more ants on the bait for a day or two: that's the bait working, so don't wipe them away or spray them. Keep food sealed and fix any leaks, because many household ants are after water as much as food.

Ants in homes and offices

The same pest is a different job in a flat, a landed house or an office. Here's what changes.

HDB flats

In HDB flats, ants usually come in along pipes, window frames and cracks in the walls, sometimes from neighbouring units, and nest in walls, sockets and cabinets. Baiting inside the flat is the usual treatment.

Condos

In a condo, ants may be coming from the landscaping, planters on the balcony or a neighbouring unit. Treating your unit is yours to arrange; if the source is the common landscaping, tell the managing agent.

Landed homes

At landed homes, ants often nest outside, in the garden, planters and along the walls, and come in through doors and windows. Treatment usually covers the outside and the garden as well as indoors.

Offices

In offices, ants gather in pantries, around desks where people eat and along cabling. Baiting can be done out of hours, and asking staff not to leave food at their desks helps it work faster.

Pest control and NEA licensing

In Singapore, companies that do vector control work, which covers pests such as mosquitoes, rats and cockroaches, must be registered with the National Environment Agency (NEA) as Vector Control Operators. The people doing the work must hold NEA licences or certificates. Before work starts, you can ask the firm for its registration details and check them against NEA's list of registered operators.

Questions about ants

Why do ants keep coming back after I spray them?

Sprays kill the ants you can see, but not the nest or the queens, which keep producing workers. With some species, spraying can also split the colony into several. Baiting reaches the nest instead.

Is ant bait safe for children and pets?

Bait is used in small amounts, in cracks and along trails, often inside stations. Tell the firm about children and pets so it can place the bait out of reach.

How long does ant treatment take to work?

Baiting usually shows results over several days, as workers carry the bait back to the nest. The firm will tell you what to expect and when any follow-up is due.
